Film Posters

So I have been looking at film posters, trying to compare use of colour, font and types of images. For example, the use of the sky as a background, or a built-up area, or city in the background is also used. However, there are the film posters such as 'warm bodies' which has a simple 'stand-out' colour to it, the use of red in the poster, can represent blood and love, although, can be used to show danger and love also. The colour is also one that stands out from other film posters, if you were to go to a cinema and see these groups of film posters all lined up, the 'warm bodies' is more likely to grab your attention due to their use of the colour, whilst having the larger font in white, and title in black, it is quite unusual to have the title smaller than the line which gives an idea about what will happen in the film, however this is used very effectively.

I grabbed a few different film trailers from different years, for a reason, this was to have a look at how over the years the design of film trailers can change.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone came out in cinemas on the 4th November 2001
SuckerPunch came out on the 25th March 2011

These two films have nearly ten years between them, yet looking at the posters there is not a lot of difference, other than the colour used, font and characters, however, if you look at the layout of the characters they are not too different, the main character has a larger image than the others and the other character surround the main. The use of the 'Harry Potter' font and title has become very well known, especially with it's 8 films, whereas the other film 'suckerpunch' has only one film and not as well known as Harry Potter.

The majority of the film posters above have more than one person on the front, or like the 'if i stay' poster which has smaller images of the same couple. The male and female and male characters are linked in some way on the image or an overlapping of the images, for example the 'Beautiful creatures' poster the young female and male couple have their arms around each other or touching one another. Also in the movie poster for 'Divergent' there is also that overlapping of the male and female character in the image.
